Yes, just figured this out, LOL. I figured I'd copy the form input element names to my own page and call "user = UMFactory.getLogonAuthenticator().getLoggedInUser(request, response);", and it worked like a charm! 
The portal itself already submits it over HTTPS, so no different from my own page.
