character restriction for '1' and 'Yes'

Hi expert,

      I installed the BC query . in the query, there are a few character restriction, such as '1' restricted by '1', 'Yes' restricted by 'X'.  I don't think '1' and 'Yes' are character, then what are they? why apply them over here?
