Edit style applies to the whole column, and is not accessible to row-by-row expressions. Do you have a column in the SQL that says which style to use? Then possible workaround is to superimpose controls with different edit styles pointing to the same column, and control visibility with expressions (only the one that matches is visible). It's also ugly and a PITA to maintain.
Two steps back sounds like a plan ;-)
